The Play-by-Play with The South Boys

The Play-by-Play with The South Boys

Filipinos undeniably love basketball. So much so that it’s become a second religion to most. The sport has become a staple in the lives of many Filipino men and women alike, and the hosts of The South Boys are no exception to that. Angelo De Jesus and Tristan Continuado are two long-time friends and fellow avid basketball fans. It was some time in 2019 when they met up and talked about other basketball podcasts they listened to. De Jesus then pitched the idea of starting their own podcast, which came into fruition on March 28th 2020 when they released the first episode of The South Boys called “The Virus and the NBA + Quarantine Things”.

The podcast focuses on basketball from four different leagues: the NBA, PBA, UAAP and NCAA. The duo don’t claim to be professional analysts/journalists by any stretch of the word, but like their viewers who love playing and talking about basketball, they are doing it as diehard fans and purely for the love of the game.

The podcast takes on an extremely casual and laid-back feel. The South Boys releases one episode a week to recap the latest and greatest in basketball for the NBA and the Philippines. De Jesus and Continuado have also interviewed some very notable Filipino athletes from different levels of the game including Andrei Caracut (La Salle Green Archer, UAAP), Simon Enciso (TNT KaTropa, PBA), and Mark Barroca (Magnolia Hotshots, PBA) to name a few. If and when these athletes do come as guests, the duo introduces them to the “Lightning Round”, a random quick-fire Q&A segment with the players.

In addition to basketball, De Jesus and Continuado are avid fans of music and movies as well, which is why they incorporate subjects such as underrated TV shows and rising artists in their podcast.

They have a segment called “South Boys & Chill” where they share their trivia, favorite lines, unforgettable scenes as well as their unpopular opinions surrounding particular movies. For example, they have had two episodes of “South Boys and Chill” solely for the movies Semi-Pro and White Chicks.

Lastly, another segment they have called “Quickie”, which only has just the one installation so far, is where The South Boys discuss non-mainstream TV shows and movies on Netflix that everyone should watch, like Mad Men, Ozark and The Crown.

If you are as much of a fan of basketball and other pop culture subjects as The South Boys, then this podcast is definitely for you. It’s a refreshing take on basketball analysis that is not purely reliant on score lines and statistics alone. The South Boys deliver the latest news and updates of the game in a very entertaining manner. They’ve been able to create an engaging environment for the basketball community in the Philippines, giving a fun avenue for old- and new-comers to follow the sport they’ve come to know and love.

You can find the South Boys on Anchor, Apple Podcast, and Spotify. You may also like and follow their social media pages on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to keep up-to-date on the latest news and updates on their upcoming episodes.
