ASEC Engage 2021

ASEC Engage 2021

Manila, Philippines – Our cultural roots and heritage play a big part in our identity and knowing who we are. The richness and diversity of Filipino culture is indeed something we should be proud of, celebrating, and passing on to future generations.

With the hopes to encourage the youth to preserve and promote our unique local culture, the Ateneo Student Exchange Council (ASEC) created ASEC Engage. It is a 5-day event of forums, storytelling, and other related events featuring personalities with unique perspectives on Philippine culture who will share their personal experiences and thoughts on how one’s own culture helps them to grow and unravel their own identity amidst the prevalence of globalization and colonial mentality in our society.

Schedule of Talks:

Day 1 (May 10, 2021): Filipinos Abroad

This talk will feature members of the Filipino Diaspora (including Third Culture Kids, immigrants, etc.) who will express their identity to Filipinos based in the country in the hopes to encourage one to think deeper about what it means to be a Filipino.

Day 2 (May 11, 2021): Foreigner in the Philippines

This talk aims to know how the perception of Filipino culture is impacted by the treatment of foreigners brought about by being non-locals in the Philippines.

Day 3 (May 12, 2021):

An asynchronous session, participants of the event will be answering culture-related questions centering on experiences and daily life which are posted on the ASEC page. Participants will get a chance to win prizes!

Day 4 (May 13, 2021): Internationally Recognized Filipinos

This talk will feature internationally recognized Filipinos who will share their experiences, what it took for them to get internationally recognized, and the impact this had on them.

Day 5 (May 14, 2021): Filipinos tackling Colonial Mentality

This talk will give an in-depth discussion on how being in the midst of colonial mentality and globalization is affecting us in our culture, society, and racial identity. This talk hopes to inspire a positive identity of the Filipino and give insights on uplifting ourselves from the status quo of Filipinos being seen as inferior.

ASEC Engage will be held from May 10-14, 2021 via a video conferencing platform (e.g. Zoom, Facebook live). It will also be live-streamed and recorded to further the broadcast, allowing the audience to view it synchronously and asynchronously.
