Bookshelf PH partnered with SM Podium’s Book Nook for a unique and intimate Women’s Month celebration, bringing together a wonderful blend of literature, empowerment, and community. It’s no surprise that a Bookshelf PH event would not be complete without the cherished presence of our talented and beloved participating authors, Ms. Jastine Beatrice Yap and Ms. Cheenee Astilla, whose books captivated the hearts of readers with their heartfelt narratives.
What better way to honor women's strength, resilience, and brilliance than by having two incredibly intelligent and skilled authors share their stories? Both women opened up about the trials and triumphs they've encountered in their personal and professional lives, detailing their unique journeys to success. From the hurdles they've faced to the milestones they've celebrated, their stories were a powerful testament to the grit and determination that women show in every endeavor.
As we gathered in a cozy, welcoming space filled with bean bag chairs, plush carpets, and various comfortable seating options, attendees could relax and connect with the authors personally. It perfectly blended warmth and intimacy, allowing for meaningful conversations about their experiences. In this comfortable setting, we celebrated the essence of Women’s Month and created an atmosphere where women’s voices and stories were heard and appreciated. It was an event that reminded us all of the strength in unity, the importance of shared stories, and the beauty of women's journeys.
As someone in their early 20s, I found it incredibly refreshing and relatable that the speakers were of a similar age range. It made their stories feel more personal and accessible, as I could easily connect with their experiences. I hadn’t expected to hear some of the struggles they shared, but it was comforting to realize that even they had faced similar challenges I’m currently navigating. It was almost a relief to hear that I’m not alone in the hurdles I’m encountering and that even those who seem to have it all figured out have doubts and difficulties.
One of the most striking things I resonated with was the conversation about career paths. I’ve always found it challenging to stick to just one path. I often find myself overwhelmed by the many options in front of me, each pulling me in different directions, and I struggle to commit to one choice. When Ms. Cheenee shared her story about how she never originally planned to become a writer but how life led her there, it struck a chord with me. What stood out even more was how she didn’t let this detour stop her from pursuing her true dream of being a songwriter. Instead, she embraced writing as a stepping stone, allowing it to become part of her journey rather than an obstacle.
Hearing her story reminded me that sometimes the paths we end up on may not always align with our initial vision, but they can still serve as valuable experiences that guide us toward our greater goals. It reassured me that it’s okay not to have everything figured out yet and that finding my way can be just as important as the destination. Her journey reminded me that the twists and turns along the way don’t make me any less capable or worthy of reaching my dreams. They may be part of the beautiful, unexpected story that will lead me to where I’m meant to be.
Throughout the event, several important discussions were held about the historical dominance of men as the “face of it all”—how, for the longest time, men have been the ones celebrated, represented, and acknowledged, while women’s contributions have often been overlooked or dismissed. The conversation also touched on the ongoing gender discrimination that continues to persist, from women being unappreciated in the workplace to certain female-dominated careers being undervalued or even frowned upon.
What stuck with me, however, was how Ms. Jastine passionately emphasized the importance of women having their platform — a space where their voices can be amplified and heard. I couldn’t agree more. We are living in a new age where women deserve not only to be heard but to be seen as equals — just as capable and deserving of respect and opportunity as men. It’s time for women to take charge, to rise and claim their place in every field, every industry, and every conversation.
One of the most powerful moments of the event came when one of the few men in the audience spoke up with a statement that deeply resonated with me: “Babae ka, ‘di babae lang.” This phrase, meaning "You are a woman, but not just a woman," was the first time I had heard such a direct and empowering sentiment from a man. It felt so good to hear, mainly because it echoed the message of empowerment discussed throughout the event. Even more refreshing was seeing men mature enough and open-minded enough to see beyond the confines of toxic masculinity — men who can recognize women as equals and support their rise without feeling threatened.
It was a beautiful reminder that actual progress isn’t just about women fighting for their place and men being allies in this journey — understanding the need for change and actively supporting it. The event left me feeling inspired and hopeful, knowing that both women and men can work together to break down the barriers that have long hindered true equality.
The Women’s Month celebration hosted by Bookshelf PH and SM Podium’s Book Nook was an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable achievements of women but also a powerful reminder of the ongoing journey toward gender equality. Through the inspiring stories of Ms. Jastine Beatrice Yap and Ms. Cheenee Astilla, I was reminded of the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the courage to embrace unexpected paths in pursuing our dreams. The event reinforced that women’s voices deserve to be amplified and that women and men must work together to create a more inclusive and supportive world. It left me with a renewed sense of hope and determination — not just for myself but for the future of women everywhere.
