A vibrant celebration of Filipino literature, culture, and creativity. Bringing together local authors, publishers, and readers, the event showcases a diverse range of books, from fiction to non-fiction, while highlighting the rich literary heritage of the Philippines. It is a platform for promoting local authors, fostering a love for reading, and encouraging discussions on critical social issues through literature. The festival had a promising and exciting lineup of book signing opportunities; author talks, panel discussions, and interactive activities for book lovers of all ages.
Speaking of all ages, as soon as I arrived at the festival, I was immediately drawn to an interactive performance that was taking place. Children were invited to join the performers on stage and play instruments, creating a harmonious blend of sound that was as much about participation as it was about entertainment. The energy and enthusiasm from the kids were contagious, and it wasn’t just a fun activity—it was also a beautiful window into Philippine culture. The melodies, rhythms, and instruments they played reflected the country’s rich musical traditions, and seeing the younger generation engage in such an immersive experience felt incredibly heartwarming.
The Philippine Book Festival was a gathering for avid readers and a space for educators and those passionate about fostering learning. The festival featured booths from various educational book publishers, including well-known names such as Phoenix Publishing House, Ateneo de Manila University Press, and the University of the Philippines Press, among many others. These booths were a treasure trove of academic resources, and just walking by them brought a wave of nostalgia. Seeing those familiar names intertwined with my education reminded me of my elementary and high school days, when I would eagerly browse through textbooks and novels, always noting the publishers that had shaped my learning.
As I wandered through the festival, I was struck by how much it reminded me of my childhood. The books, the names, and the activities were like stepping back in time, offering a sense of continuity and connection to the past. It was as if I had been transported to a world that celebrated both the present and the memories that have shaped me, blending the joy of discovery with the warmth of nostalgia.
As I strolled through the bustling halls of the festival, I couldn't help but marvel at the vibrant array of costumes around me. Everywhere I turned, attendees were transformed into their favorite characters, each more creative and detailed than the last. One figure stood out among the sea of costumes—a person dressed as a priest. At first, I was confused, unsure whether it was a tribute to a specific character or a quirky personal choice. But then, over the loudspeakers, an announcement rang out: a cosplay competition was about to begin in just a few minutes.
That announcement sparked a wave of excitement, and suddenly, everything made sense. The festival was more than just an event—it celebrated fandom, creativity, and passion. For me, the cosplay competition became one of the highlights of my experience at PBF ‘25. It was extraordinary to see some of my all-time favorite characters come to life in front of my eyes. Among the many incredible costumes, one that stood out was Darna, who ultimately became one of the top 4 winners of the competition. The attention to detail, the energy, and the love put into each costume were truly inspiring, and it was a reminder of how deeply people can connect with the stories and characters that shape their lives.
