If I Were To Wish Upon A Shooting Star

If I Were To Wish Upon A Shooting Star

This Mother’s Day, if I were to wish upon a shooting star, I’d ask for more time—because time is relentless and waits for no one, so the common saying goes.

As time passes, it becomes more tangible with every second. In reality, the long road of life is mostly spent chasing one’s own dream and purpose. Often, we have tunnel vision, focused on achieving our goals. As we do so, among our biggest supporters are our mothers. They push us to take the leap we need and choose our paths. But the journey towards our destination is a lengthy trail.

We were raised by the gentle, caring hands of women who took on the role of mother in our lives. They helped shape our dreams through countless sacrifices and their unwavering encouragement. We carry the love they gave us during our journey towards our dreams.

Success is the culmination of years of hard work. For many of us, the anticipation of success comes with the desperate hope that we will be able to share it with those who guided us and never left us along the way, like our mothers.

The nagging feeling of wanting the woman who clapped her way through every milestone of our first graduation, performance, ceremonies, or even simple achievements like celebrating the first time we learned to ride a bike, draw our favorite character, and make our first artwork to witness the moment when we finally made something out of ourselves is a bittersweet drive that fuels us to continue striving in our journey.

Someday, the next time she will be clapping will be during our first jobs, the opening of our dream house, or a grand trophy for our recognition, and it will be her time to be taken care of and prioritized.

Giving back is a desire all children have for their parents. The time, care, and love that they have given us in different forms are one thing we must learn not to take advantage of. Celebrations like Mother’s Day are only a reminder of one of our motivations to continue persevering in our lives.

We battle with time, but really, there is nothing a dreamer’s heart raised by a mother’s love wouldn’t be able to achieve.

Kalpesh Desai’s poem best captured it:

I know you had wished

Upon a shooting star,

And I had promised,

That it would be all right in the end.

And see, we've come so very far,

With limitless love,

And hearts to mend.

Time is relentless and waits for no one, but one truth will never change. No matter when we arrive at the end of the long road of our dreams, we will always carry the love, care, and wisdom that moms have imparted to us. It echoes louder than a simple hopeful wish that not even time could erase.

So what about you? If you could make one wish this Mother’s Day, what would it be?
